Volatility Surface

Is BTC vol in contango or backwardation right now?

/greeks/snapshot· pandas · ~3 min★ pro
Output PreviewLine chart: IV term structure curve

Fetches real data from the Cayo Largo API

What You'll See

Plots the ATM IV term structure from 7-day to long-dated expiries. Contango (upward slope) is normal. Backwardation (inverted) signals fear or an imminent vol event.

The Trading Edge

What most people do

Check a single ATM IV number and call it "the vol." This ignores the entire term structure, which tells you more about market expectations than any single number.

What this gives you

The full IV curve across DTE buckets, with slope direction, spread magnitude, and historical percentile. When the curve inverts (backwardation), the market is pricing near-term danger above long-term uncertainty.

Go deeper

Combine with VRP Scanner to see if the front-end vol is justified by realized moves. Link to Contagion Signals case study to see term structure inversions in real events.
